IRELAND: Salmonella threat from pet reptiles - (Independent.ie)
May 5, 2008 – 5:46 pmThe growing number of families who keep reptiles as pets are being warned of the dangers to children and pregnant women.
A new report revealed how six children in the south east contracted salmonella after being in contact with reptiles.
The report was drawn up by public health doctors Marrita Mahon and Anne Marie Byrne of the HSE south east, which covers the counties Wexford, Waterford and Kilkenny.
They have now called for public education on the handling of reptiles in order to prevent infection. Iguanas, terrapins and snakes were all implicated in the the cases of infection investigated by the doctors. Although the public normally associate salmonella with food, it can also be passed on through contact with reptiles which carry the bug. It can cause serious illness in young children, the elderly and people who have a weakened immune system.
