MOUNT HOLLY SPRINGS, Pa. — A Cumberland County farmer is facing a $4,300 fine for selling raw milk without a permit.
About 100 supporters who say raw milk has health benefits demonstrated outside on Monday. A district judge in Mount Holly Springs found Mark Nolt of Newville guilty of four counts of selling raw milk without a permit.
State health officials say raw milk has been linked to outbreaks of salmonella, listeria and E. coli. Spokesman Jonas Stultzfus says Nolt plans to appeal.
The state Bureau of Food Safety says the 49-year-old Mennonite farmer Nolt was selling 300 gallons of raw milk a day and must obtain a permit as other dairies in Chester, Montgomery and Bucks counties have done. Nolt’s permit expired in August 2006, and bureau Director William Chirdon says he has refused to allow his milk to be tested.
