National Beef appeals alleged humane handling violation - (Meatingplace.com)

National Beef Packing Co. said it is appealing a noncompliance report it received from USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service following a nationwide audit of humane handling practices at slaughterhouses that supply the National School Lunch Program.
The Kansas City, Mo.-based beef processor received the NR for alleged overcrowding in its livestock holding pens at its Dodge City, Kan., plant. Company president Tim Klein conceded in a statement that there were 53 head of cattle in a pen designed for 49.
“Still, the cattle were able to move freely, had access to water and were not vocalizing,” he said. “Rather than focus on how the pen looked, the better question to ask is this: Were any cattle hurt or injured? The unequivocal answer is no. USDA records will show no harm done to the cattle in our plant that day.”
